Summer Ambassador Recognition Program

Summer is upon us. It is time to start our Summer Ambassador Recognition program. There are many great examples of service around the community. One of our best ways to promote great service in Mammoth is to reward and celebrate it.

The Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce will identify an Ambassador Recognition Committee. Committee members plus a few selected members of the community at large will look for great service providers in the community and recognize them.

Great service is defined as service that somehow goes above and beyond the call of  uty.
It is not just friendliness. It is some special way of delivering the service itself.
When committee members identify a great service provider they will:
  1. Thank them and explain clearly why they are being recognized.
  2. Give them one of our gift certificates.
  3. Take their picture for the paper.
  4. Write a brief description of their performance and send it to Jack Copeland, Committee Chair.
The Chamber will also recognize businesses that consistently provide great service. The Chamber acknowledges the many challenges businesses confront in our seasonal economy. It is very difficult to establish a consistent standard of high service through the highs and lows of Mammoth’s business fluctuations. But, to a great extent businesses  and their employees are “the face of Mammoth”. Our reputation as a resort hinges as much on the impressions created by employees at businesses throughout the town as it does on the quality of recreation in the area. Some businesses do a great job of welcoming guests and  delivering fast, friendly, accurate service. Others do not. It is in everyone’s best interest for the Chamber to promote outstanding service throughout the community. To that end we will recognize businesses that consistently provide great service.

The summer program will begin the week of Monday, July 25 and continue through Labor Day.

Recognition

Recognition is a powerful form of Positive Reinforcement. Behaviors that are reinforced are repeated. The purpose of the Ambassador Recognition  program is to identify and reward individuals who provide outstanding service thus encouraging more great service. Service may be delivered in  their business or it may be on the street, simply being extraordinarily friendly and helpful.

The Chamber will collect 200 prizes. These prizes will be printed on "scratch cards". Secret Shoppers will award recognition scratch cards to employees and residents of the community who demonstrate great service. The winners will pick up their prizes at local businesses. Their names and pictures will be printed in local media and their service celebrated!

The MAP Program

The Mammoth Ambassador program is a community wide hospitality training program. It is sponsored by the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Lakes Tourism, and the Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce. We recognize that our economy is based on tourism and recreation. All of us earn our living either directly or indirectly from the visitors to our area. Our success, our sustainability, relies on the overall experience that visitors have while they are here. An enormous component of that experience is interactions that visitors have with the employees and residents of the community. We also realize that if visitors have a great experience here they are more likely to come back in the future. If they have a mediocre experience or a bad experience they are less likely to return. Therefore it is in our best interest, everyone’s, to make sure our visitors feel welcome and help them have a good time. Our Brand, our image, is relaxed, laid back, friendly, informal, and unpretentious hospitality in a place where recreation opportunities are plentiful and BIG. We have big mountains, big vertical, big spaces, lots of trails, lakes and wilderness. The purpose of the Mammoth Ambassador Program (MAP) is to promote a community wide focus on delivering great hospitality and recreation, living up to our brand promise. We cannot hope for good hospitality. We have to systematically train, model, promote, and reinforce great hospitality.

The Mammoth Ambassador Program (MAP) has two delivery methods: 1) Train the Trainers, many businesses already provide employees with extensive on-the-job training. During November we will work with their trainers to develop content for use in their internal training. 2) We will conduct Ambassador training events in December prior to Christmas for employers who don’t have time to do their own training and for residents and employees of the community at large.

The content of the Ambassador program will focus on two major areas: The Spirit of Hospitality and Helpfulness (way finding). We will identify and teach the kinds of behaviors that create a warm, friendly, welcoming environment for visitors and we will teach our employees and residents the answers to the most frequently asked questions of visitors. We believe that by focusing on great hospitality we will encourage economic growth and stability in the community.
